Two Infants

I put this essay off long enough!

This essay is on the story 'Two Infants'.

One infant is born to the ruler, the other to the poorest of the poor, the father killed through the ruler's despotic rule.

I remember reading this story before and being as confused by the ending then as I was this time. The poor woman prays for mercy on her countrymen, and she and her baby die. The despotic ruler and son live on. Was the woman's prayer answered?

You can almost answer yes. You see, the crowds are cheering the birth of the son and the continuing rule of the family that is in power. They approve of the continuing of the way of life that they know and understand. The people haven't elected to overthrow their government. And the woman's malcontent would cause more hardship on others; more death.

We have living example now of what happens when a people are not truly ready to be 'freed' of despotic rule.

Despostic rule has to be replaced with something the people can accept, something they know and understand.
