2011-09-30 9:06 AM 38 years later I finally saw it and heard it all-last night. The whole thing, start to finish, all the words, songs, everything. The first rock musical to shake up the religious sections, churches on their feet in anger. "Jesus Christ, Superstar". I had heard songs-the hits, even had the album and knew some of the songs. I loved the songs. But I never saw or heard the whole thing. I loved it. I want it. I do not see why the hullabaloo! What where they afraid of? The message? The questioning? Nothing antichrist was said-well one thing was questioned. The timing of His coming. But I think that is something mankind always has wondered.
I had a friend who argued with me about the song "I don't know how to love him" sung by Mary-the harlot. I explained to her that from Mary's point of view this was unusual, she was trying to put her love of Christ and her profession together and they weren't melding. And she knew that if he approached her as a man it would be wrong. Mary questioned her own feelings. The friend was in arms because the song made Mary doubt her conversion to Jesus. Maybe my friend was right, but after seeing it last night, I don't think so. What was so amazing was the fact that the whole opera was not done with a cast of thousands. In fact, I would be surprised if there were 200 total. This was shown on cable, I cannot remember the station, but this month on Monday's they are showing westerns!
