Musings About Writing and Stories About Life

She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

Strands of red energy

AETW: 1085

Charlie chewed off a corner of my To Do list today. I wonder if she’s trying to tell me something?

<><><>

Today has been rather amusing. I was awoken by Dennis, here earlier than I expected. He finished the work on my car in short order, which was trés spiff. I puttered for a bit, and then went off to my hair appt. I put Afalwen in my laptop backpack with the plan of going to the Borders near my hairdressers afterwards and writing for a while.

I love getting my hair done. I love having my hair played with, and especially washed, and it feels so good afterwards. Plus I had roots the length of the Golden Gate Bridge (not that color, though).

Ever since I started dyeing my hair in college, I noticed that I actually do change when my hair is red. I walk differently. I have a different, better energy. Strange but true. So it all felt really good. Apparently other people noticed, too. (Keep reading.)

I was starving by the time I was done, though, so instead of working, I picked up sauerkraut (for Reubens) and went to the gas station. As I was pumping gas, the guy on the other side of the pump started chatting with me. We were complaining about how slow the gas was pumping. Can it get any slower? “Any slower and it would be sucking gas out of our tanks,” I said wittily. As I drove away, I realised he had probably been flirting with me. It’s been a long time since I’ve been flirted with by a complete stranger. Did he think I was flirting back? I have no idea.

I ate, worked on some little stuff (getting a GP out to someone, catching up on some e-mails, that sort of thing). Then I realised that there’s a B&N near Trader Joe’s, where I also needed to go at some point. Since Afalwen was already packed up…

I grabbed keys, left the house, got in the car…and realised I’d grabbed the wrong set of car keys. The extra set. The set without a house key.

I opened the garage door (because we have a remote for that) and proceeded to check back doors. To my combined delight and horror, the sliding glass door out back hadn’t been locked since yesterday when Dennis tried to install the new screen door. So I was able to come in, lock the door, and exchange keys. The cats were very confused.

A lady and I had a conversation while I was walking through the B&N parking lot. She was in the wrong aisle for her car, and figured it out when she hit her remote lock. “Thank goodness for these things,” she said. “What did we do without them?” “Walked a lot,” I said wittily. I was in major wit mode today.

This new B&N proved to have fewer tables, and all were occupied. I didn’t notice the cushy chairs until I was leaving, so I parked myself on a reasonably comfortable straight chair in the romance section (directly across from where my books will be shelved, hee!), read the first chapter of a new Nora Roberts, and got down to work.

I wrote almost 1K, finishing Chapter 13 of AETW and starting Chapter 14. It felt real good. My goal is approx. 30K by the beginning of March. It’s do-able at about 1K/day. Normally I can write more than that, but I do have some other projects in there (and I just got a new journal to edit before Teresa gets here, blah).

Then I went to TJ’s and got some lovely salmon burgers and fresh veggies and mint tea. The guy in line in front of me stared at me a couple of times, which was rather disconcerting. The dyke checkout chick told me I was cool before I’d said anything to her except hello, and later told me she liked my hair. Hmmm…

So I made supper, and while I was doing that, Ken called, so I didn’t miss his call as I’d feared. Now I’m waiting for Lasairfhiona and Wulfric, who are giving me a ride to the Baronial Council meeting.

I’m in a chipper mood. You have been warned…

Back from Council now. You know, when you print out your notes of various things you need to talk about at a meeting (I wear the hats of Avant Courier, Chronicler, and spokesperson for Costume Guild), it really helps to _take the paper out of the printer_ before you leave. I remembered most of it, though.

<><><>

My brain seems to be shutting down now. I prepped the new journal so I can start editing it tomorrow, and answered some e-mail, and put meeting stuff away. I considered watching “Friends”, but it’s a 45-minute ep. I’m better off going to bed and getting a reasonable start in the morning.

Gods, that makes me sound old. Or at least adult. I _hate_ that!

Tomorrow I take Grimoire to the vet for a follow-up, and then I’m having lunch with Mom. Around those two things, I just have to keep working on writing, editing, e-mail, and the various stuff on the To Do list. All manageable, although I wish I had a few extra days in the week!
