Musings About Writing and Stories About Life

She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

Rattlesnake Driftwood Blues

Words Written: AETW: 1282

Wrote a new scene on AETW, one I knew needed to be there but hadn’t gotten to when the novel last petered to a stop. It probably needs to be about twice as long—I don’t know if the tension is nearly thick enough—but for now, I move on. I know what the next scene will be, and then I must trust that it’ll all flow from there ‘til the end.

I also found an “in revision” story that might work for an upcoming antho. The main critique was that things happened out of order, so I need to swap two major scenes, then smooth out the transitions. It won’t be simple, as they were partly based on the seasons, but it’s late summer vs. early autumn, and I’m sure I can make do.

I ventured outside for the first time today since last Sunday’s staggering home from the after-show party, and got my hair done. It’s still not the right shade of red, but it’s closer. I amused my fabulous gay hairdresser with my rant about building homes in California (a snippet: if your street has the word “canyon” in the name, think about how canyons were formed—by LOTS OF RUSHING WATER!—and don’t be surprised when the water takes that route again, you bonehead), and he told me that all the driftwood that’s washed up on the beach is infested with rattlesnakes. Never let it be said that going to a salon is a waste of time. You can learn cool and weird shit.
