Musings About Writing and Stories About Life

She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

The mind behind the boobs

Words Written: Animal Attractions: 266

Last night after work, Ken came up and we met our friends Kelly and Richard for dinner. We four realized that we hadn’t seen one another since our housewarming party in late October. If you think we’re busy people, you haven’t met Kelly and Richard, who have full-time jobs from home and are (respectively) a professional ME dancer and ME musician. And play SCA. Oh, and Kelly’s starting her PhD in ME history—by taking Persian, Latin and Turkish languages. She does nothing by halves.

We had a lovely time, but it meant that Ken and I didn’t get home until after 9 p.m. I had to transfer files from one computer to another to get some work done, check e-mail, etc. I did manage to make a few tweaks to an anthology story, and critique a story for someone else (although because I was so tired, I know the critique I wrote is harsh, so I need to tone it down and make it more constructive before sending it. I think my reactions to and suggestions for the story are valid, despite my tiredness—after all, you have to be aware that an editor is probably tired and cranky, and thus you have to do whatever you can not to give them a reason to put down your story), but that was it. I didn’t get my 500 words done. And I knew I wasn’t going to be able to get up early today and get them done, because I was going to bed so late already.

I’m so very, very tired.

Sigh.

Tonight, we’ll see. I’ll do my best.

I want a different view out my office window. I wonder if the neighbors would mind if I painted a big mural on the side of their house?

Mm. Thought so.

Okay. Slightly better. I decided that I pretty much wrote a 500-word crit between yesterday and today, so I’m counting that. Today, however, I got less than 500 words done, because it was editing rather than new words. I did, however, try to capture the voice of the caterer in Teresa’s and my collab novel. In my mind, she’s Pamela Anderson—looks and sounds like a total bimbo, but then it slowly dawns on you that there’s a razor-sharp business mind behind all that hair and lips and boobs.

Anyway. Tomorrow some co-workers and I are trying a carpooling thing; we want to use public transportation but can’t face the 6 a.m. option. I’m taking Afalwen, and hope to get some writing done both up and back. Cross your fingers that it works out. If we can do this even three days a week, it’ll be a huge help.

Ed and Marian arrive tomorrow! They’re probably already in the air. (I’m rotten at the time difference, but if they’re not, they will be soon.) So cool!
