She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

Virtually working

Words Written: AETW: ~850

So today I carpooled in with three co-workers. I so hope this works out, because it was great for me (other than getting up earlier than I really wanted to—it’s still better than getting up even earlier than that for the bus). I popped on the headphones and wrote more than 500 words on AETW, although some of those were notes. If we can do this even 3 times/week, I’m going to sign up for the gym across the parking lot for work, and work out at the end of the day before we carpool home.

AETW is expanding…I was kind of expecting this, but it’s still a little scary—the prologue is going to be Part I, and be 2-4 chapters long. Eep. I was about to say that it’s going to take me longer than expected to do the rewrite, but honestly, if we keep up this carpooling thing, it won’t be as long as I think. Plus, maybe I can work on it in the mornings (for example) and then work on a Brava novel on the way home. That would kick ass.

Plus, I think I’ve picked something for the Novel-in-a-Week challenge (which will hereinafter be called NIWOC, the final two letters standing for Online Challenge). A few years ago I wrote a book for a Silhouette subline called Soulmates. It was rejected, for good reason, really. I want to completely rewrite it from scratch with much more plot. It looks like gothics are coming back, and it has all the elements of a gothic: a crumbling Victorian mansion, a legend (and possibly a ghost), cliffs, the sea, a sense of isolation, a storm that almost washes out the road…If not a gothic, at least a romantic suspense. I’ll be doing more research into the genre(s) before July, anyway.

Oh, in case anyone cares, the small yappy-type dog must have been a visitor, because I haven’t heard it since. Thank goodness.

At work today we had a virtual seminar on copyright. I was surprised to realize that I knew most of it. What was interesting was that I spent most of the time internalizing the information from the pov of a writer, rather that of a publisher. Oops, does that count as working on another job during work hours?

Carpooling rocks. I got what feels like a lot done, even though it’s not a huge wordcount, but even better, I had the evening mostly free (except for moving some files around). The 7-page prologue for AETW is turning into 2–4 chapters, but I’m okay with that. I’m not sure how deeply I want to go into a war between the Seeligh and Unseeligh Fey, in a book that’s a contemporary romance with fantasy elements, but we’ll see how it goes.

We’re carpooling again tomorrow and everyone seems reasonably happy with the deal, so I’m chuffed. If it does indeed become a regular thing, I’ll join the gym next to work, and work out for an hour at the end of the day (taking my lunch at my desk to make up for it). Fingers remained crossed, except when I’m typing…
