Musings About Writing and Stories About Life

She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

We’re here, ensconced in our little hotel suite. I didn’t get any writing done on the trip itself, despite the fact that Ken fixed the car’s cigarette lighter so we could plug in the laptops, etc. We spent most of the trip talking. Which, I think, is a good thing overall—that we can spend almost 8 hours talking, after 10 years of a relationship. We also listened to two Neil Gaiman stories on the iPod: “Snow Glass Apples” (which I’d read but Ken hadn’t—creepy, gorgeous story) and “Murder Mysteries” (which neither of us had read, although I looked it up and it’s in a collection of his I have, so I suppose I could have read it and completely forgotten it, but that seems unlikely). (Then again, the story does involve forgetting…no, just not going there.)

Yesterday I started the new novel, a Black Lace with the working title of Angelika (the name of the Victorian hotel in the book—the two owners are Angela and Kari). I didn’t hit my 5000-word goal, but got out a respectable 3573 words, which I’m happy with. Finished Chapter 1 and got a running start into Chapter 2. I imagine the draft will run a little short, because I’m trying for speed, and when I stop and stare into space and try to figure out how to describe something, I really have to stop myself, leave a note that says “[describe X],” and move on. Or scribble a couple of words in brackets about the description to be added later.

I also read a story I need to crit for someone, but by the time I did that it was late (writing has to come before critting, so I don’t slip into editorial brain when I’m writing), so I have to write and send the crit today. I also need to work on a short story every day. My only excuse is that Ken got back at 3 p.m. yesterday, which threw my schedule off.

Oh, I also got in my half hour of exercise in the hotel gym. Go me!

We went out for a scrummy Thai meal last night and how I have leftovers for lunch today. Hooray!

Well, it looks like the first cup of tea finally kicked in. Time to get back to Angelika.
