Musings About Writing and Stories About Life

She's like the girl in the movie when the Spitfire falls
Like the girl in the picture that he couldn't afford
She's like the girl with the smile in the hospital ward
Like the girl in the novel in the wind on the moors

Check your goose here

Words Written: Angelika 650

Got up early today to get a few words written before we head out to the coast. Let’s see how it goes!

Hm, only about 250 words, but at least it was something. Now it’s late, and I’m going to try and pound out at least that many more before bed.

We got out to Lincoln City just in time to meet everyone for lunch. The drive itself was gorgeous—the rain had mostly stopped, and there were billowing clouds and occasional streaks of sun. I was stunned during one stretch, by a lake, to see at least 15 hawks in the trees, and I regret not taking a picture of one, who was low in a tree near the side of the road. I also regret not taking a picture of the sign at the side of the road in one town that said “Check Goose Here.”

Lunch was fun as usual, and it was great to see everyone again. Afterwards a smaller group of us trooped over to the local library for Ursela LeGuin’s talk. Wow, what a great lady! She read a story (slightly grim, but gorgeously executed) and some poetry; the theme was setting/place, kind of, and she talked about living on the Oregon Coast and whatnot. She took questions, and some were interesting and some were bizarre (as was, in one case, the questioner, who had mended one of his Birkenstocks with duct tape to the point that there was little Birkenstock left). I didn’t have any books for her to sign, but that’s okay. I got to sit and chat with Kris for a bit before we left. She tried to talk us into buying a 1930s church near them that has several apartments built in already. (So I came home and e-mailed the real estate info link to Morgana and Brian. evil grin)

The drive back was uneventful (and dark), and we stopped for dinner at a local pizza place and got the scrummiest of pizzas: a white pizza with chicken, artichoke hearts, onions, and fresh tomatoes. Unngghhh… I was good and ate only two pieces, but a few minutes ago I succumbed and sliced a sliver off the side of one. There will be pizza for breakfast—how fine is that?

After we got back to the hotel, we watched Charmed while I caught up on a backlog of e-mail, mostly OCW stuff.

Tomorrow, it’ll be back to the salt mines. Now that the stories under immediate deadline are finished, I’ll be focusing back on Angelika. I also have to buckle down and put some serious time into some ABC-CLIO work, and exercise. Hopefully we can hit Powell’s tomorrow night, too…
