Writing Stats: Rejection from Grendelsong for “A Familiar(‘s) Tale;” rejection from ASIM for “A Father’s Blessing.” Yed, I hab a code. Id sucks. I spent about five minutes feeling hideously sorry for myself because there’s no one to go to Roxsbury Deli and get me matzo ball chicken soup. Then I called, ordered the soup and a gyro, and went and picked it up my own damn self. (Because my philosophy is “Feed a fever, feed a cold…hell, just feed me!”) Of course, on the day when I’m sick and miserable, I get the double-whammy of rejections. I’d previously trunked “A Familiar(‘s) Tale” awhile back, brought it back out of the mothballs to submit it to a likely sounding anthology, and since there are tons of new mags out, have been subbing it again for the last year or so. (I actually did sell it once, but the magazine folded before the story was published.) The editor did say “Make sure you keep us in mind for the future,” which is promising. As for “A Father’s Blessing,” it had made both the first two culling rounds at ASIM and the editor said he was “very reluctantly let[ting] this one go.” He also included two readers’ comments, in case they’d be helpful. One felt the story was too long and rambled, but the other one said “This must be one of the best I’ve read.” Looking back, another place also said “great reluctance” and it’s gotten several other very nice rejections. Oh well. Onwards! <>-<>-<> It’s official. I’m sick. I found Kathy Griffin’s “Life on the D-List” to be fascinating watching. <>-<>-<> Despite spending most of the day dragging and icky, I got a little writing done, and I’m really happy about that. It’s been hard getting back into the habit, and I really, really didn’t want to lose momentum. I’d like to make the goal of writing every day this month, but I know there’ll be a few days when I’ll be away from home that it probably won’t happen. But if I can hit every day except the travel days, I can live with that. ---
