2002-12-06 10:27 AM Electrolite on Strom Thurmond Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (0) I haven't been reading Patrick Nielson Hayden's site as much since he disabled comments (that was the best part of the site), but I flipped over there today and found this post a little weird.
He quotes Gandalf from LOTR, speaking to Frodo about Gollum: "Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them?" And the quotation is a link to a story about Strom Thurmond's 100th birthday. What exactly is PNH saying? Gandalf was admonishing Frodo for thinking that he could be the arbiter of who should live and who should die. Is PNH suggesting that Thurmond does not deserve life? If the quotation linked to an article by someone wishing Strom Thurmond dead, it might make sense. As it is, it doesn't make any damned sense. Can someone explain it to me?
