What does he say in his defense? However, when things are going well — and with one spectacular exception, things were going very well for the American space program in the 1960s — voices of dissent will not be a matter of great concern. It is only when things are not going well that voices of dissent begin to seem disloyal, dangerous, stupid, or repugnant. He's the lonely, brave dissenter, put upon for calling a spade a spade, telling people what they're too afraid to hear. Um...no. More like the insensitive cretin spitting on the graves of the dead astronauts and grotesquely blaming their deaths on the genre that apparently dared and goaded them into danger, and all before the sizzling pieces of wreckage have had time to cool. Read the whole thing, if you have the stomach. There are also additional criticisms of the original essay here, from David Hartwell and others.
