From the Generation 5 site, which includes weekly updates of links to AI-related articles, there's news of the DARPA Challenge for Autonomous Ground Vehicles. Basically, it's a government-sponsored contest ("DARPA" is the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) open to U.S. nationals, and the goal is to create an autonomous ground vehicle capable of navigating a route of over 250 miles (from somewhere around L.A. to somewhere around Las Vegas). The prize? A million bucks, and retained ownership of intellectual property rights. The contest will apparently be held yearly, until there is a successful winner or the year 2007. You can check out the website for more details on the rules, but this seems pretty interesting. Philip and I are now working on game AI, and we're still in the early stages, but I eventually want to delve into neural net-based control systems for robots, a task they're well suited to. It's a hell of a long way from what we're doing, but it still gets the brain churning. Any enterprising engineers out there who plan on entering the first contest next year?
