A License to Sling Shit

Via Matt Yglesias, here's the story of a new San Francisco ordinance requiring the licensing of fortune tellers.

She says it was a way to fix a problem she and police officers have noticed for years: a steady stream of frauds committed by "psychics," and the consumer protection complaints that accompany them. In recent years, she says, she saw victims duped of tens of thousands of dollars by unscrupulous fortunetellers.

As opposed to all the fine, upstanding psychics who sell legitimate services at fair market prices. Good effing grief.

Somebody in Matt's comment section even posted a link to the application for a similar permit in Santa Cruz.

The header is: APPLICATION FOR PERMIT TO PRACTICE METAPHYSICAL SCIENCES

And the fee is $140.00.

Huh...only a hundred and forty bucks to be sanctioned by the city to sling dogshit.

Not bad.
