Hi everyone and welcome to "Off The Top Of My Head Monday" here at "Silly Thinking" now union made. I'm Jim Farris filling in for Douglas Lain.

Remember back to the NAFTA debate in the first year of the Clinton administration. NAFTA sent thousands of jobs to other countries with little or no worker protections or enviromental provisions. The slight debate here involved exporting good jobs making the United States a "service economy" I.E. the jobs left would be low paying sales and clerk jobs with the majority of manufacturing going to polluted slums in Mexico et. el.

NAFTA was passed and the jobs left, Mexico and other countries pollution problems escalated, major corporations made (make) larger profits and the job market in the USA declined. Now the largest employeer in this country (traditionally General Motors and other manufacturers) is ...Target stores. Not only that but Target is the smallest- largest- employer in this countries history. Many of the jobs are "permanent temp" positions and other kinds of low end-dead end part time jobs.

The fear of this country becoming a society of low paid sales clerks is now a reality.

And right now George W. Bush wants to relax most of the already limp restraints built into NAFTA and increase the dwindling number of jobs available here to more foriegn ports of call.

It is amazing; this callus disregard for workers rights, livelyhoods, and families; that in the worst job economy in the United States since the Hoover administration (remember him? the depression and all?) this "President" wants to gut an already horrible policy and free up business to increase more profits on the backs of poverty ridden undereducated workers all over the world leaving the people here under insured, under fed, and under employed.

Isn't it sad that because of the callus disregard for the American population by the Republicans in power, the roll over the Democratic party did (does)to do what ever any body wants to wield decreasing "power", the buyout of many of the powerful unions that were supposed to protect workers, and most importantly the unabashed greed of American business, we are left with dead inner cities in the rust belt and vacant factories from Maine to Alaska.

No state in the United States can afford the basic human services they were designed to provide. Not one. And here we sit with a "President" whose poularity is now finally decreasing to just under 50% becuase, like France before the revolution, we are now pretty much divided into the "have's" and the "have nots".

Happy Monday.

Join us tommorow here at "Silly Thinking" when "Gloomy Gus" will be gone and Sy Gold will join us with "Celbrinet". The real serious news of the day: Celebrity gossip, thank God.
