"SILLY THINKING: YEAR END REVIEW" From Silly Thinking in New York here is Connie Chung... CC: Hello and welcome to "Silly Thinking: Year End Review". What a year for "Silly Thinking". For fans of the troubled blogzine there were times when they didn't know what they were going to get when they dialled up "S.T.". Tonight we'll look back and ahead on "SILLY THINKING: YEAR END REVIEW" "Silly Thinking" was the voice of one man when it started last year. That man was troubled "Silly Thinking" president Douglas Lain. Lain published poitical papers and debated other writers on a narrow field of subjects. Then in late August Douglas Lain took a leave of absence to write his first novel. A novel that would become a collection of short stories called "Polly's Pony" and be nominated for a National Soft Cover Book Award called "The Softies" but that was still to come. [The above is a complete fabrication. Polyphony is a short story collection that came out in 2002.-Doug] Doug called his good friend, Jim Farris, to sub for him on "Silly Thinking". Farris, a popular humorist and writer, said yes and thus changed the course of "Silly Thinking" forever. But it wasn't easy. On September 5th, just days after Farris had started writing his popular column, Douglas Lain sold "Silly Thinking" to Beatrice Foods, a large conglomerate. Suddenly "Silly Thinking" was no more, replaced by "Food Is Fun" a new Beatrice inspired collection of recipe's and features. Farris left the blogwaves in protest. Lain assured Jim he would meet with Beatrice and take care of everything. It was a disaster. On September 10th the new "Silly Thinking: Now Union Made" premiered to tepid reviews and little response. The opening episode somehow tied the brilliant Franz Kafka to a Beatrice produced Bacon product. Farris reluctantly returned and really hit his stride by bringing poular newspaper columnist Sy Gold and Oscar winning actor Marlon Brando to the struggling Blog. Lain began to miss deadlines and Farris reported that he could not reach the elusive writer to discuss ideas. Then on October 30th Douglas Lain was fired from "Silly Thinking" and replaced by a common house cat. You may remember the hoopla with the "Pepper Is Here" advertising blitz. But Pepper was a disaster and, although not known publicly, was the beginning of the end of CEO Larry Silly's career. On November 12th a new face for "Silly Thinking" was announced. Laurence Silly announced that Linda Blare would take over the troubled Blogzine. Most people assumed it was the "The Exorcist" star but threw a miscommunication it turned out to be a ANOTHER Linda Blare. On Novemeber 22nd Lawrence Silly resigned. The Board of Director's shocked audiences and media watchers when they announced that Douglas Lain would be returning to the blogzine he once founded. But just four days later, November 26th, Lain appeared drunk on the air. Farris resigned on December 4th and with him went Marlon Brando, Sy Gold, and all of the "Silly Thinking" staff. Lain promised to continue and on December 5th produced an unmitigated disaster called "The Brando Show" featuring a Marlon Brando celebrity impersonator. Lawsuits were filed and the program never aired on the East Coast. It was then that Marlon Brando stepped in and held a summit meeting, bringing peace to "Silly Thinking" at last. And that was when I started here at "S.T." as journalist in charge of Special Events and Breaking News. On December 9th "Jim Farris Presents SIlly Thinking with Douglas Lain" premiered to favorable reviews and an excited public. Now Breaking News stories and incisive features are seen like Douglas Lain's thoughtful look at the peace movement "Analizing the Movement" and SY Gold and Marlon Brando continue thier highly rated features. And what about the future? In January the "Silly Thinking" Awards! The first Anuual "Silly's" will be handed out in an exciting new Award show. A new and exciting movie review program will premiere and "Silly Thinking's" new dedication to journalisim will continue with more breaking news and probing documentaries, featuring, me, Connie Chung. So join us for the new year and every year. "Silly Thinking" It really is all here! Good night. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
