STHT!

For your best tips in DVD and home video here is ST Home Theatre on it’s new day and time!

Lets see what new for home viewing!

1. “Cold Mountain”. (2003) Nicole Kidman stars in this effective, but turgid, civil war love story filmed in Bulgaria by Anthony (“The English Patient”) Minghella. Minghella could still use a refresher course in pacing, he never met a long romantic moment he can’t linger over for as long as possible, but this film is beautifully shot and does effectively show the heartbreak and brutality of war. Renee Zelwigger won a supporting Oscar for her funny accent. Thank God Nicole has a secret stash of eye liner in the barn.

2. “The English Patient”. One of the longest and dullest Oscar winning Best Pictures (still it must compete with “Chariots of Fire”) this romance has been dubbed the anti “Casablanca” by film purists, for it’s questionable moral stance on fighting the Nazi’s. This makes a good double bill with “Cold Mountain” if you also swallow a lot of speed.

3. “Unforgiven” Two disc set. Another Best Picture winner, this Clint Eastwood western is a fitting crown to a string of Eastwood masterworks in the western genre that started with Leone’s “Man With No Name” series in the early 60’s.
Everything works perfectly here including Gene Hackman’s brilliant Oscar winning supporting role as an ambivalent bad guy sheriff.

4. “Secret Window” Johnny Depp stars in this adaptation of a Stephen King Novel. Depp is a hoot in this “is he going mad?” story. But how many “writer going insane” or “writer reflecting on his life” stories has this hack patched together? This King story is not very compelling.

5. “Spiderman ‘67” In 1967 CBS bought an animated “Spiderman” series for it’s Saturday morning kiddy line up. In this 19 hour Marvel comics release, watch the second and third seasons, the original cheesy animators went bankrupt and the network brought Ralph (“Fritz The Cat”) Bakshi to produce the show. I think these guys were, on ACID! There is one memorable episode with psychedellia dripping from every frame. Spidey decides he’s dreaming, man.

6. “Blazing Saddles” 30th Anniversary Special Edition. Funny, but dated, raunch comedy from Mel Brooks was incredible in ’74. Still the comic gems remain, Count Basie in the desert, everything Harvey Korman says and does, and Madeline Kahn’s hilarious… everything, that made her a comedy giant, and help make this film a comedy classic.

7. “Wonder Woman” First season. If you were a kid when this show was made and you found your hands and private parts could combine for a sensational time then you’ll probably find this a must see. Everyone else can move on.

8. “Little House On The Prairie” Fifth season. (See #7, this list).

9. “South Park The complete fourth season. Like “The Three Stooges” I can only watch “South Park” for a few minutes at a time before getting a headache, but unlike the Stooges, this stuff is really funny. But for over 9 hours I would submit to the Manchurians and become a brainwashed Presidential candidate.

10. “Dawson’s Creek” Complete Third Season. I have never seen a moment of this show and have no idea what it’s about. Best as I can figure, a high school kid owns a creek and fucks a lot. Enjoy.

See you next time on “STHT”.
