This is BREAKING NEWS From ST! Mt. St. Helens ERUPTS. Here, from the New York St World News Headquarters in New Jersey is Connie Chung. CC: Good afternoon. The U.S. Geological Survey is holding a news conference right now. Scientists have labeled the explosion today A burp. Seismic activity has picked up again, although scientist warn that they have to wait and see if seismic events, earthquakes, return to the pre- noon levels, if they do they will know that another explosion will, in all probability, occur. No magma reached the surface with this spectacular explosion, today, but gas and ash did blow ten thousand feet in the air. Scientists say if these events occur more small to moderate explosions will happen in the next few days. It is likely that Magma has moved up the interior of the mountain. The new hole in the mountain is enormous, but could be the first of many. The USGS says there is no reason for panic or more evacuations at this time, but all towns and cities in the immediate area, including Portland, Oregon and Vancouver, Washington, are on a higher level of alert. Vancouver is reporting a dusting of ash is now covering the city and it is moving in the direction of Portland, but it is light and people with respritory problems should get small masks like painters use or see thier physicians. But other than that, no hazards for the general public is reported. The alert level remains at 2. Stay with ST. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
