Mt. St. Helens ERUPTS.

Here, from the New York St World News Headquarters in New Jersey is Connie Chung.

CC: Mt. St. Helens has erupted, shooting ash and rocks into the air, 10,000 feet. Scientists say this is probably a small precursor to a larger explosion still to come. The ash is moving southeast to west. Schools have been closed in the area. The ash cloud, is relatively small and moving away from Vancouver Washington, and Portland, Oregon.
The new crater looks enormous.
The huge eruption took place just after noon, but no magma was released.
Scientists say this is probably a release of pressure, seismic eruptions have subsided for now, but will probably begin again. This could be the first of several explosions.
Flights at Portland International Airport have been delayed and cancelled.
