A Bit of Randomness

Most people go through life dreading they'll have a traumatic experience. Freaks were born with their trauma. They've already passed their test in life. They're aristocrats. --Diane Arbus

Conversation

So Tuesday night I was out at a friend's house where a weekly gathering takes place. My "dialogue", as it has been want to do lately, consisted mostly of my daughter and random goofy comments. I really couldn't figure out how to have an actual conversation.

Which is something that has come up often for me over the past X months - what do people talk about? If religion and politics are out (as the saying goes), what then? Does anyone even really *talk* anymore or is it a matter of people just taking turns monologue-ing?

I know I've gotten quite used to my communication with others being a lot of (quick) catch-ups, IMs and venting about whatever the latest troubles of our lives are. Not to mention, the blogging that seems to have taken the place of much of the above, anyway.

Is it a matter of time? Not enough activities in common anymore? That the world of technology has enabled a dearth of interpersonal skills.

Not to mention that being with a 15 month old nonstop has only reinforced my natural tendencies to natter on about anything and everything. Since there is, at this point, not too too much in the way of understandable responses in a give-and-take sort of way, I've also gotten to be an even worse listener than I already was.

*sigh*

So I suppose I just need to get out, be social and practice practice practice. :^)
