Reading: _Heart of Darkness_, Joseph Conrad. Finished _The Missing Persons League, Frank Bonham, yesterday, and _No Dark Place_ by Joan Wolf, the day before.

Weather: overcast with fog. Snowflakes yesterday. I like snowflakes.

The ferrets are: in their cage temporarily so they can go potty in a socially acceptable place.

My daughter sent me the essay quoted below, and I wrote her the answer below that. I like what I said, so I copied it here. Is it a "real" journal entry? Maybe not, but it's my journal, darn it, and I will do as I jolly well please with it.
Subject: Fw: America

Story in Tampa Paper - September 30, 2003
Will we still be the Country of choice and still be America if we continue to make the changes forced on us by the people from other countries that came to live in America because it is the Country of Choice???????? Think about it........

All I have to say is, when will they do something about MY RIGHTS? I celebrate Christmas, but because it isn't celebrated by everyone, we can no longer say Merry Christmas. Now it has to be Season's Greetings. It's not Christmas vacation, it's Winter Break. Isn't it amazing how this winter break ALWAYS occurs over the Christmas holiday?? We've gone so far the other way, bent over backwards to not offend anyone, that I am now being offended. But it seems that no one has a problem with that.

This says it all!

After hearing that the state of Florida changed its opinion and let a Muslim woman have her picture on her driver's license with her face covered this is an editorial written by an American citizen, published in a Tampa newspaper. He did quite a job; didn't he? Read on, please!

IMMIGRANTS, NOT AMERICANS, MUST ADAPT....
I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Americans. However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others. I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to America. Our population is almost entirely made up of descendants of immigrants. However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand. This idea of America being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Americans, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom.

We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the LANGUAGE!

"In God We Trust" is our national motto. This is not some Christian, right wing, political slogan. We adopted this motto because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.

If Stars and Stripes offend you, or you don't like Uncle Sam, then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. This is OUR COUNTRY, our land, and our lifestyle. Our First Amendment gives 'every' citizen the right to express his opinion and we will allow you every opportunity to do so. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our flag, our pledge, our national motto, or our way of life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great American freedom, THE RIGHT TO LEAVE.

If you agree -- pass this along; if you don't agree -- delete it!

AMEN I figure if we all keep passing this to our friends (and enemies) it will also, sooner or later get back to the complainers, lets all try, please!

Hi Franci (I am sending copies of this note to others, too. I hope you don't mind.)

This essay has some points. It is kind of rough, and much is exaggerated, but I agree with some of the statements in it. I don't think I'm going to send it to all my friends and relatives without my own commentary. Maybe my position is similar to the author's, but politeness will not hurt our cause, any more than it will hurt anyone else's. Rudeness is not an American virtue. The desire to not offend is a good thing. If it is not reciprocal, that is what makes it a bad thing. If the majority must not offend and the minorities are free to offend, this is not right. No one should not have to go around apologizing for being a part of any group.

Slightly off the subject, practicing Jews and Seventh-Day Adventists should not have to work Saturdays, and Muslims shouldn't have to work Fridays, but those who honor Sunday as the Lord's Day shouldn't have to work Sundays either, nor be made to defend their right not to, just because they are a majority. It is not right to discriminate against the majority any more than it is right to discriminate against minorities.

I recall one time a young black woman in a chat room was ranting around at a bunch of people, but targeting mainly me as the most verbal in the group, how we white folk should apologize -- and she was talking about an attitude of perpetual apology -- to they black folk for what our ancestors did. ("African Americans," some have gone back to calling themselves as they did in the seventies. I have never heard any of us referring to ourselves as "European Americans," but we should.) I told her that my ancestors were in Germany when her ancestors were going through all that crap and besides, no one has to apologize for what their ancestors did. We each are who we are and only responsible for what we personally do. That is what I told her. I treat people as individuals. If one of them is a shit, then I walk away, just like I do with any person who's a shit (with the exception of Maggie.) If that person is a shit because they're black or Hispanic or Viet Namese, well, they are hurting their own cause and eventually I might not treat black people as individuals. I think repeated bad experiences is what's behind a lot of "prejudice." "Prejudice" means pre-judging, but if we are judging from past experience, is that really prejudice?

And about learning English? Yes, absolutely. There need to be ESL (English as a Second Language) classes offered, and attended by people of all ages. No, Spanish should not be made an official language. Interpreters in food stamp offices and such? Well, probably, but maybe the people needing them should have to help in paying for them, and they should definitely be required to attend ESL classes as a condition of receiving aid, just as people who are capable of working are required to look for work. Most of our ancestors had to learn English. Aunt Elsie had to learn, and so did her parents, and there were no ESL classes then. ESL classes are a good thing. So, I agree with many of the points in this essay, but I dont' agree with the militant rudeness.

love
MOM
