Not to be too smug or anything, but after semi-regular bouts of mysterious DSL failures, our quite good local ISP and DSL provider was able to get Verizon to admit that, yeah, our phone line is having dial tone problems, and this is causing the problems.

Ha! *smirk* I just knew those weasels couldn't be trusted with their own phone lines. Also, I was pretty freakin sure I'd checked all the right things, and it had to be hardware -- right again...
