{ Now playing: [teevee blahblahblah] Recent movies: Reptilian*; Return of Mothra I & II**; Godzilla (1956)*****; Recent books: Judges; Philemon; Schlatter, The Theology of the Apostles; Norton selections from Spenser, The Faerie Queene; Brust, The Lord of Castle Black; Luther, Lectures on Genesis 15-20; Dorothy Sayers, Gaudy Night; } Luther on Genesis is terribly good, and it reminds me why I stick with Luther's heirs after all these years. Genesis, volume 3 of the Works, is his lectures on the book. He rattles along from close exmination of the grammar and wording, and will launch, soaring out, and in my mind's eye I see him out from behind the lectern, prowling the front of the hall, winding up a good rant. Now, denouncing the papists, shifting to his countrymen's hardness of heart, admonishing the students before him, lifting their eyes up to God's promises! Exclamation points are used, liberally. He settles in, leans back on a table or desk, and steadies himself to the task of showing how to divide the Word, how to find the necessary lessons, how to thank God. Winding down, he returns to the text, turns a page, begins again. That turning the page is like seeing the Beloved's face again, in a new light, or again in the morning: joy. |
