2014-05-02 7:54 PM Dessert I have three favorite children but only one of them is dessert because he came so much later in the meal.
The photo below is of the card I've used for his graduation from UVA JAG Law. (I know I still don't have that right but it will have to do.) The painting on the card is by Wayne Thiebaud. I've been a fan of his forever. I'm especially fond of using his images for celebratory occasions because his paintings are so upbeat and happy. And below the photo of the card is something I've written with a heart deep in reflection of the fine person my youngest is and all he's accomplished and all he will accomplish. I think it's fitting for the occasion. I have three amazing children. David is my dessert. ***** May 2014 David, I'm still fine dining on my fine life, but recently thought about dessert - that it's saved for last - to give a meal a pleasing, sweet closure. Thiebaud's delicious cards have been a favorite of mine for years, so when I pulled this one out, I realized that this week in Charlottesville with you is my dessert - to spend time with the one who came last. David, you came late into the meal and I'm so glad. I've had the remarkable opportunity to savor all these years with you... the dessert, if you will. This week especially represents a culmination of your sweet success - earned with the integrity and values you stir into the amazing life you've created. And just when I thought it couldn't get any sweeter... you brought sweet Olivia into my life! These moments with you are golden... timeless. In years to come when you look at this clock, let your thoughts first go to its original owner (Great-grandfather Phelps (Lo), and then remember this time together... and savor the dessert. (Below is a photo of the clock. It's a Jefferson Golden Hour Clock I had repaired for this occasion.) Among all the richness you've brought to my life I still smile when I remember the time when you were so very young and you told me you loved me more than all the lampposts in the world. You changed my world because of all your goodness... now you are prepared to change the world's world. You will make a difference - of this I am certain. You are just that kind of person. Thank you.
