Nanowire a Superior Disease Detector. A wire thinner than a human hair has proven to be 1,000 times more sensitive at detecting disease, producing results in minutes rather than days. Charles Lieber of Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts and colleagues developed and tested the silicon nanowire in what they say is the first example of direct electrical detection of DNA using nanotechnology. "This tiny sensor could represent a new future for medical diagnostics," says Lieber, a professor of chemistry at Harvard and a cofounder of nanotechnology company NanoSys.
