2003-01-10 9:00 AM Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom Mood: Contemplative Read/Post Comments (3) |
There are so many journals I follow on a daily basis that it takes me half an hour to get through them all. Here are some I particularly like:
Janet Chui's Paint Stains Michael Jasper's Another Wrecked Web Journal Neil Gaiman's Web Journal Bill Henderson's The Appleseed Caitlin R. Kiernan's Low Red Moon Cory Doctorow's Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom (more on this below) Gabe Chouinard's hyper machine interfaces Greg van Eekhout's Does He Ever Shut Up? Nalo Hopkinson's Intermittent Web Diary Patrick Nielsen Hayden's Electrolite Rain Graves's Diary of a Madwoman William Gibson's Pattern Recognition Now, as for Cory Doctorow's new novel, (his first novel, actually) Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom (out right this minute from Tor Books), he's offering a complete electronic download of the entire book from his website in a number of different formats. If you click on the link to the journal above, it'll point you to where you need to acquire it. There have been 20,000 downloads since its launch on Wednesday. It's an unusual tactic to spread the word about the novel, but it seems to be working right now. People are reading the e-version, then like it so much that they want a paper version and go out to buy it. Patrick Nielsen Hayden was telling us about the novel at Clarion, and it says a lot about him that he would support Cory's idea. Big cojones on that dude for going to his bosses and telling them that they won't be making any initial money from this action. But it shows how much he trusts and believes in Cory that he would put so much faith in him. It also doesn't hurt that Cory runs BoingBoing, which gets around a quarter of a million hits every month. So go take a look; download a book today.
