Editor Annalee Newittz descibes the site as a pop-culture Nirvana in which she and her team of sci-fi savvy writers get to focus on, " . . .fantasies as well as realities in terms of what's going on in the future."

The term io9 itself is science fiction, refering to an implant made popular in the late 2070's which tapped into a tachyon stream and allowed the user to view possible futures. The device, of course, brought about frequent cases of insanity and like all delicious things which cause us more harm than good, was outlawed.
