Let me preface this by saying that I believe John Travolta is a good actor. He was great in PULP FICTION and PHENOMENON. I didn't care for MICHAEL. It was a stupid movie. I liked him in WELCOME BACK, KOTTER. I give credit where credit is due. He's good.

But not great.

He can dance. I'll give him that, too. He's also a good friend of OPRAH, which has to help his image. My wife likes him. I don't.

I don't know why. Maybe it's the Scientology thing. But he doesn't really spout much about that. Maybe it's the fact that he smokes like a fiend in every movie he's in. But that's true about a lot of actors. I'm not sure what his views are on smoking, but that's up to him. Does he get people to smoke by lighting up so much in movies? Maybe that says more about the people who start smoking that it does him.

What's bothering me is something I read about him in PARADE magazine, in the Walter Scott Personality Profile column. I only read this for humorous enjoyment, but more and more it scares and depresses me that this is what people are thinking about.

Here's the Q & A:

Q. John Travolta has spoken out about global warming. How does he reconcile that with the fact that he owns and flies two jets? —Michelle Levick, Ventnor, N.J.

A. Travolta, 53, likes to point to his humanitarian efforts, such as flying supplies to the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Like many celebs who drive large SUVs and fly in private jets, however, he exemplifies the old adage “Do as I say, not as I do.”
Let me get this straight. "Do as I say, not as I do."

I don't know if he really said that or not, but if he did, where the hell does he get off? I should do what I can to combat global warming, but he is somehow exempt from that? I guess it's okay for John and his family to have private air travel while the rest of us lowly bastards endure that stress that air travel has become. I guess he (and other "celebs") can drive their SUVs, while they're telling us lowly bastards to think green.

I know he flew supplies to New Orleans. That was nice of him. He also made sure the media were there to film him flying down there in his personal plane. I donated to the cause, too. Lots of people did. Maybe not as much as him, and definitely not in such a grandstand way, but people gave.

I saw his house on a "rich and famous" show once. He parks his plane right behind the house. All the Travoltas need to do is walk out the back door and get on the plane. Wouldn't that be awesome? A fantasy. Something to aspire to, if I ever become wealthy enough to afford my won plane. And pilot.

But burning that much fuel to take only myself and my family somewhere could be considered wasteful, and I would think about that. Sure, I would like to avoid crowded airports, security hassles, and cramped conditions. I'm sure everyone does. But if I'm going to believe in global warming, I should make some changes. I'm thinking that the next car I buy will be a hybrid of some kind. I try to conserve energy when and where I can.

I surely wouldn't let people film my glamorous life and "humanitarian efforts" with my personal plane, and THEN go on TV as a big global warming proponent. That's not setting a good exmaple. That's crap.
