2008-02-02 10:43 AM 2008 Books #14 Thirteen Reasons Why Finally, a book I like! Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Ascher is a YA novel (thus read quickly) about a boy who gets tapes from a schoolmate who committed suicide.
In it she names and accuses other classmates' callous actions in a web of interconnecting relationships and coincidences for her suicide. What is slowly revealed is the destruction of her reputation and sexually aggressive behavior permitted by their circle of friends. The main idea I got from this book is how much we will regret not reaching out to someone, not making that extra effort to know what's beyond the surface. My only quibble (and possibly inescapable for this kind of book) is that the girl on the tape showed a much higher level of self-knowledge and emotional intelligence then I would credit for someone who then decided to go ahead and commit suicide. But I still recommend it :) Read/Post Comments (1) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
