2008 Books #113 The Devil You Know

I wish I remembered where I heard of this book. The Devil You Know is really good.

I really enjoyed it. (and there wasn't even romance in it!)

Mike Carey, the author, got his start in graphic novels, and there are many pop culture references in the novel that had me smiling. However, that wasn't the only reason I enjoyed the book. What Carey has done is to take a murder mystery with a flawed main character with a moral conundrum, and set it down in a version of our world where there are ghosts.

Just recently, the dead have risen. Meaning, most people acknowledge the existence of ghosts, but nobody knows where they come from or where they go after someone, like our main character, exorcises them.

In this tale, our main character, Felix, gets involved with a ghost haunting an Archive, but somehow manages to get mixed up with eastern european gangsters in the process.

Very well done. Might even be a possibility for crossover readers (readers who don't necessarily read fantastic fiction)

Recommended for all!
