2006-10-22 1:21 AM ILY: Minor update I LOVE YOU, I'M SORRY, AND I'LL NEVER DO IT AGAIN, now in post-production. Today I put the 5.1 surround mix together with picture and did the final trims, cutting about 30 seconds from the running time. The new running time is 14:32. I'll continue to obsess over tweaks, minutiae, and color issues, but the cut itself is good. Finished running time should be within a second or two of this one. Cuts were mostly "dead space" (actions that didn't necessary feel draggy, but which weren't missed when removed, such as a second of Larry preparing to speak a line, an extra bit of "laugh beat," or two seconds too much of Peter waiting to deliver his final line), problem-solving (for example, I couldn't tell until we saw it on the monitor at Paramount Pictures that the knife switch fell off the wall when Paul pulled it just before the factory goes dark), and rhythm/feel issues that just felt like they could use a trim. The contract for the digital post work was awarded today. The work itself should be done by the 26th (except for the phone number retouch, which I'm hoping to work around by asking that company whether they actually care that their number is in our film), and then we'll submit to our first festival. I like everything about the most recent DVD design except for the vector version of the two looming thugs. I'll be reverting to the bitmap version of those silhouettes, which is a posterization of an actual frame from the film. It's not as sharp and clean, but I think it has more personality. (I may retouch it a little, though, so it doesn't look like Beretta's wearing a feather boa.) I should also probably start thinking about the DVD. The festival submission version will be very straightforward, with a minimum of options in order to minimize the chance of screening errors. But if we ever get into distribution, I want the special features to include the ability to turn the various audio tracks on and off. The viewer should be able to watch with just foley, or just ambiences, or dialogue and music but no effects, or whatever combination is of interest. We're not there yet, but I'll keep the concept in mind as we nail down the festival version, so as not to cause myself unnecessary work when we move on to a general-release DVD. And soon we'll have to think about where to hold the preview party... Read/Post Comments (11) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
