2006-03-25 9:27 PM another man's junk.... Will Durant was right when he said: "We don't want a thing because we have found a reason for it, we find a reason for it because we want it." And if you don't believe that, just follow me around to thrift stores and/or garage sales.
I admit, I'm as guilty as anybody when it comes to buying stuff I have no earthly use for. I blame it on my upbringing. As the old saying goes, "From a fig tree..you get figs." My mother was the queen of garage sale shoppers.
Its only natural I suppose that some of that should have rubbed off on me. But ,my Mom was the best. She would buy things any sane person would consider totally useless and be using it for something the next day.
I on the other hand would buy something that had a perfectly good use, let it sit in my basement for years before I even remembered it was there. And during those idle years, I probably would have gone to the local discount store and bought a brand new one for 3 times the price I paid for the used one.
Take for example the food chopper I bought and stowed in the basement. I thought it would be great around the holidays when there were all those nuts to chop for the cookies and the onions for the stuffing...etc. I think I paid a quarter for it...and thought it was a great bargain.
However, by the time I got ready to use it, I forgot it was there....so, I bought a brand new one at the discount store....which broke down after its first use. I ended up chopping everything by hand!
It wasn't until I packed up my house to move from NY to KY that I found the "bargain" chopper.
Now, if I had been as good as my mother, I would have known just where it was and yanked it from the basement when I needed it. But I didn't...so it ended up in my own garage sale.
Now, if I can just remeber where I put that set of elk horns..I wanna make a coat rack. There's no room in the closet for coats...I've been visiting the flea markets lately and since I have no basement here, I have to stash my treasures somewhere.
