David Letterman went on the air last night for the first time since the WTC bombing. His guests were Dan Rather, who touchingly cried a couple of times during his interview, and Regis Philbin, the only man who could make Letterman laugh at a time like this. But what impressed me the most was Letterman's opening speech. He is a man who is obviously distraught and nervous and doubtful about the propriety of producing a late night talk show at such a sad time. But I admired the way he showed his emotion and gratitude and also his willingness to carry on as best as he could. The goal of terrorism is to disrupt life and spread fear.
