We are minutes - minutes - away from crowning the new NZ idol, can you feel the tension?!?

Pitted head to head are Nik, your archetypal loverboy with dimples, and Rosita, to whom one judge said, "the world is ready for a new Polynesian princess, and you're it!" and whose photo accompanied the obligatory "She's too fat to be a pop star" story on page 1 of the Herald.

I'm in Nik's camp, but he only won my heart by a smidge, and that's cause he sang a romanticized version of The Darkness' "Thing Called Love." Not quite as sweet as the original, but pretty fun anyway.

Consider this: American Idol is bad enough. How many bad singers have made their way all the way to the top 12? And that's coming from a country with 300 million potential candidates - ok, pared down to the age 16-25 range, but you get what I mean. Here that whole pool is something like 4 million - just consider the odds, the relative numbers of good vs. bad local singers aged preteen to twentysomething.

Yes, it is as bad as you think.

Pre-commercial, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul are checking in, with their usual nothing new to say. Oh God, now the NZ judges are on stage, singing. This just got way worse.

Please just announce the winner...

And it's...

Rosita

Well I'm still an NZ Idol aficianado, if only for that final group medley, which spanned from Tears for Fears' "Shout" to Soft Cell's "Tainted Love." Gotta dig the 80s hits. They just got them over here, you know.
