2006-05-28 4:25 PM Everyone hates immigrants. I've not paid an extreme amount of attention to the whole immigrant debate, but I still don't understand why they are so unwelcome here. I'm not saying that they should flood our school and health systems, but if they want to come here legally, let them come. Immigrants have to be some of the hardest working humble people around and this country should be honored to have them. Both sets of grandparents came from foreign countries, and none of them were cheating, looting, meddling greasy scumbags that many people think of when they envision immigrants. They worked hard their whole lives and saved all their money; they didn't buy anything they didn't need or couldn't afford. They made sure their children had the tools to succeed in America, so that they could live better lives than their parents did. Being that I am the spawn of European immigrants, I cannot bash any outsider. There are a lot of Mexicans in my town, and people seem to have a problem with this. Mexicans ride their bikes while we pine away in marathon drive thru lines, they buy rice and corn where we buy ice cream and potato chips, they work long hours willingly while we count down to the next vacation. They are here because they want a better life, not because they want to rob and cheat us. I'm sick of people complaining about how they are stealing jobs away from us. Our best cars are Japanese, all of our computer programming is done in India, our clothes are made in Sri Lanka and our toys are made in China. What do we have to complain about? We've already cut as many corners as we possibly could, so what's all the fuss about people coming into this country and taking jobs that we wouldn't even give a prisoner to do? The problem comes from within this country, not the people coming into it. Everyone is so concerned with being politically correct and making sure our precious children don't get their feelings hurt. I was watching the news the other day and a story came on about how teachers in some school district stopped using red pen to correct papers because it was "damaging to a child's self esteem." Who thinks of this stuff? Not everything your smelly grubby kid does is going to be right, so why sugar coat the reality of your child's ignorance or lack of understanding when you could try to fix the problem before it gets worse? Giving kids a false sense of accomplishment is only going to lead them to become unmotivated teenagers who will then become moochy adults who will live at home until they're 40. I'm not saying that immigrants should be exempt from paying taxes or being in the army. I think they should be obligated to the same duties as every other citizen. And if they're law abiding citizens, who cares where they come from? If we were so concerned with illegal immigrants, then we should have stopped companies from hiring them years ago instead of waiting till now to do something about it. When people feel threatened they get angry, and people cerainly feel threatened by immigrants. They should have a chance to become citizens just like everyone else. Instead of trying to turn their country into America Junior, we should more accepting of them and their culture and attempt to learn something from their ethic as opposed to treating them like subhumans. No Mexican has ever given me any trouble when they came on my line at Shoprite. It's always the pushy soccer moms and disgruntled fathers who probably have more money than they can use wisely and it's their kids who are overweight and need their papers corrected in purple ink so their wittle feelings don't get hurt.
