2008-12-19 10:49 PM Time for a good old fashioned rant. I used to use this blog to curse out anyone and everyone who had done me wrong. I haven't done that in awhile.
I would like to start off by stating that I will never buy an American car. At the rate we're going, I won't need to; I'll already own most of those cars by means of taxpayer dollars. Where automakers come off thinking that they are infinitely better than everyone else who is in a financial bind is beyond me. And just how exactly are they going to restructure their failing business model in only a few months? We've already given into them once. Just wait. They'll be asking for more, claiming the first round was not enough and without them the world will crumble and die. I may be 21, but it's obvious to me why car companies are failing. First of all, there are TOO MANY American cars out there. All American cars are essentially the same thing packaged under different names. People like choices, but not that many choices. And especially when those choices aren't necessary. Like a Pontiac G6 and a Chevy Cobalt. Why even bother having different cars? An attempt was not even made to conceal the identical identities of these two cars. And how many behemoths does Ford need? Explorer, Excursion, Expedition, Edge, Flex, Escape, blah blah blah. No. Pick two of the above and concentrate on that. Stop bombarding people with millions of cars that all look the same. Tell Jeep to eliminate all their pansy crap vehicles and stick with the Wrangler, Cherokee and Liberty. And Hummer? please. We've always been told to support our economy by buying American cars when in reality many of them are made in Mexico. Car companies think people are stupid and will do what commercials will tell them to do, and that through thick and thin, four dollar gas or not, people will keep buying SUV's because it's the patriotic thing to do. People are not stupid. They will not keep coming back to the same company if that company fails to deliver a quality product. They also will not shell out hundreds of dollars to fuel their cars. If you want people to stop doing something then you should make that one thing so expensive that people can no longer afford it. As soon as gas went through the roof people dropped their SUVs like a plate of pork fried rice with a fly in it. All car companies lost money, not just American ones. But the foreign companies had not relied on gas guzzling vehicles like the big three and were able to cope with changing consumer needs, unlike American companies who were to stubborn to admit that their time was ending. And now, after years of thinking consumers were too stupid to deserve anything better than their inferior products, the millionaire CEOs have the nerve to ask us, the ravaged citizens of this country who are weathering record layoffs and a miserable economy to hand over a few billion dollars so they can go in the corner and think about what they've done. So now, who wants to buy a car from a company who can't even conduct business in an acceptable fashion? Who wants to buy a car from a company who had no other option but to beg for a handout like a homeless man asking for a nickel on the street? With a business so flawed, the only way for them is to crash and burn even if it means their workers are out of business. And outside of Detroit people really don't care about those losing their jobs. Because we're all losing our jobs too, and why do those workers get a silver lining and the rest of us get unemployment checks? I don't blame Bush for his decision. Give them money, and he's giving them a handout. Let them die and he'll be accused of not caring about our economy. There is no quick fix. There are no magical loans which will heal all. This isn't going away tomorrow or next month. We have to change the way we think, and what I find most ironic is that we're encouraged to spend, spend, spend to boost the economy when we can't AFFORD to spend. That's what got us in this mess to begin with--people living beyond their means. Now, to get out of it, we must continue to live beyond our means so we can support businesses. Well, whatever. People can piss away their money. Mine is staying in the bank, thank you very much. You can be happy with very little. It's unfortunate that people are too afraid to figure that out.
