Well, we made it to Leeds. We're having a wonderful time at Steph and Patrick's; after three nights in a hotel it's a wonderful relief to be in a home . . . we had our first truly good meal last night! And I am very much appreciating being able to offload the navigational responsibilities. I can just trot along behind Steph and gawk at everything . . .

Steph said something really interesting about Leeds. Apparently all the architecture dates from the Victorian era, because the Victorians had so much money, they came in and razed all the old buildings and put up new ones in their stead. (Shades of that pharmacy in Chelsea [MI] on the corner of Jackson Rd and Main St. . . ) And here I thought such "deconstruction" was a peculiarly American phenomenon . . . Now I'm wondering what about the Victorian sensibility would have led them to do such a thing. They were the precursors to the Modernists in lots of ways, I guess . . .

Ah, well. Off to sightsee . . .
