2006-06-07 12:03 PM Sunburns! Read/Post Comments (6) |
I got (received?) a rather mild sunburn on my face about a week and a half ago. It was a pretty minor sunburn, yet I still felt a little worried since the last thing I should be doing is going outside without any sunscreen.
My recent sunburn got me thinking about how my generation is the last generation to "not know" about the dangers of sun damage. We know now, but we spent most of our childhood in the dark about what can happen if you don't protect yourself from the sun's UV rays. The funniest thing about all of this is how the first thing a Dermatologist will ask you is how many sunburns you've had as a child. Does anyone else besides myself feel like doubling over in laughter when they ask you if you've had more than TWO bad sunburns in your life?!? TWO??? TWO is the dermatolical standard? Dermatologists are basically saying that one is bad, but two bad sunburns over the course of your life is reason enough to be worried about getting skin cancer. When I was a kid, I think I had at least two bad sunburns a month. And I don't mean just your average, run of the mill sunburn. No, I'm talking about the kind of sunburn you get when you spent the better part of a Saturday afternoon playing in the sprinkler in your front yard. Or the kind you got when you spent all day playing in the waves of Galveston island. These are the types of sunburns that prevent you from taking a decent shower for about 2 weeks. Or even worse, these are the sunburns that prevent you from laying on your back for as long as it takes for your sunburnt body to heal itself. TWO? Are you kidding me? I think I've had about 15 BAD sunburns in my life. How crazy is it that humans are so frail as a species, that we have to protect ourself from direct sunlight when you're in it for more than 15 minutes? You don't see lions and tigers rubbing lotion onto each other's hides. Maybe sunburns are just part of the human condition. I certainly remember my parents telling me to put on sunscreen. But did I listen??? Absolutely not. Maybe people have to experience what it's like to get a sunburn so that they learn the lessons of why they should use sunscreen. anywho... peace and love Read/Post Comments (6) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
