Admission was free today at Cheekwood, so I headed over there after lunch for an hour of walking around.
In spite of the rain, there were lots of families there, including one picnicking in the Japanese teahouse. The kids were drawn to the scarecrows (click images to enlarge):
There was a Rose Society show inside one of the exhibit halls. The theme was The Sound of Music (yes, Socrates, I immediately thought of you), which meant there were floral interpretations of "High on the Hill Was a Lonely Goatherd"...
"Ray, A Drop of Golden Sun"...
...and many other lines from the musical. There may have been a half-dozen categories from "Edelweiss" alone. I also meandered around the Japanese garden and part of the museum. All things considered, it was pleasant enough, but I've got cheaper and closer-to-my-house options for walking/sightseeing, so I'll likely continue visiting only for specific events (sang in a wedding there maybe four years ago, and there's been a Christmas party or two). What a difference 15 degrees makes - today's the first day I've needed my leather jacket this fall, and I've got mulled wine waiting on the stove (to accompany the next four hours or so of correspondence and spreadsheets).
