I had an urge to look up images of Tom McCamus tonight, which led me to a still of him and Dixie Seatle in Dave Carley's Taking Liberties, and I wanted to know who they were portraying, so I downloaded the script from the link provided on the page. Not every line works for me (it'd be interesting to compare the 2008 version to the 1992 original...), but the overall structure of the play is ingenious (six monologues by five characters linked to each other across three generations), and the crises of conscience/confidence the characters face ring painfully true. (For instance, just today a friend mentioned wanting to raise hell about pro-life cupcakes being handed out at her child's school, but feeling it might not be worth the problems it could create for their kid.)
This is not the time for me to take on another nonprofit project, but the idea of staging a reading is tempting nonetheless...
Finished four poems this week, and Dead Mule will be publishing them in December. In the meantime, Justin Evans's quartet over there - I wouldn't have thought I was in the mood for anti-heroic lyrics at the moment, but something about these suited the sadness and some of the difficulties of this particular week.
I have hot tea at hand, and honey drizzled across a slice of Wonder bread, and an abundance of friends to write back, and friendly neighbors - oh, and two clients paid me me this week, too. I am blessed beyond measure.
The glimpse of Andrew Topel's Book of Spells at quarrtsiluni - nifty!
