Switching to the slow lane

I tell ya, after going pretty much non-stop for the past month, working on the house as well as day job stuff, I feel a bit brain dead. Can't seem to focus on reading, writing, or any other new projects, really. I guess this is what happens when you actually COMPLETE everything on your To-Do list.

So I'm hoping this is a temporary thing.

I really need to find a good book to suck me in again (which reminds me, I need to make a list of all the books I read last year -- I think I maybe read 15 or so... pretty lame, eh?). I was reading Elizabeth Bear's Hammered on my Palm, but the style isn't working for me -- I wish it were all in Jenny's point of view! I guess I see now how switching PoVs all the time can be frustrating to readers: lesson learned. I switched over to my buddy James' SF/mystery Metal Sky.

In print versions of books, I bought Mary Doria Russell's The Sparrow as a sort of motivation to work on my new story, a Wannoshay "prequel" of sort, but that novel isn't working for me either. I'm open to suggestions -- especially some good ol' science fiction with great characters (preferable Earth-based, but I'm open to anything GOOD).

Like I said, I'm hoping this aversion to reading is just a result of thinking of nothing but house-house-house the past few weeks. Luckily I do have a couple stories to read by fellow writing friends (which I'll get to really soon, Kathy, I promise! The moon tales are COOL).

And at some point I want to talk more in here about my thoughts about novel-writing and making each scene count, but I figured I'd better do some writing first before I spout off on those issues!

I'm off to get me some caffeine now. That oughta do the trick. Later!
