2009-12-20 11:21 AM Thoughts On The King I have a love/hate relationship with Stephen King. I always have. Although debated in many a literary circle, he is one of my favorite authors for one reason -- his characterization of people. He gets into your head and cozies up, and he can stay for a very long time. His characters are memorable, for the most part, and somehow he makes you care about them and what happens to them. He shows you what makes them tick, what makes them sympathetic, and what makes them hateful.
That's when he's "on". When he's off, I want to throw the book across the room. In his anthology, "Just After Sunset", he's on more than he's off, thankfully. So far, I've enjoyed each of the stories I've read so far (I'm on story eleven of thirteen) but there's a couple that really stand out in my mind and that I'll remember for a long time. One of them is "The Things They Left Behind". While I do wish it had a more creative title, this is a story of the aftermath of 9/11. Poignant and rending at the heartstrings, it's the story of a survivor of the attacks and the mission he is left with after his co-workers are killed. Another is "The New York Times at Special Bargain Rates". A brief look at contact beyond death, and I have to say I wish there had been a warning attached to this one. It triggered off quite the crying jag, thank you very much Mr. Asshole King. Just sayin'. "The Cat From Hell" was awful. Not because I love cats, but because it was so predictable. *Yawn*. Of course cats are from hell. Duh. "N." reminded me a lot of H.P. Lovecraft, and the jury is still out on that one. What I really want to score is a copy of "Under The Dome". I've heard good reviews about it, likening it to his masterpiece, "The Stand". I'm down with that. Rumor has it that SK has an idea for a new book in the Dark Tower series, tentatively titled "A Wind In The Keyhole". He said it would be eight months before he'd be able to start writing it. OMG, I think I just wet my pants a little. **** Okay, I know it's mean and petty, but...OMG. Blame Lala. She's the one that sent me this link, and I've spent too much time with my jaw dropping and giggling at some of this stuff. I present to you...People Of WalMart. Oye.
