Update and Catching Up - Subtitled: Juicy Gossip From Days Past

Long-time readers will remember my stint in the Hotel of Hell and Hilarity, and like me, may have wondered what happened to the cast of characters that inhabited my world for three years.

Well, last night I spent a fabulous two hours with the lovely Miss Thang, having caught up with her on Facebook and reconnecting. She works at a hotel close to me, and I popped over for a much-needed break. I'm so glad I did, because not only does she looks stunning (the woman does not age, and still looks like a gorgeous chocolate bon-bon), it was like a breath of home and that was one of the best hugs I have ever enjoyed. (I have become such a hermit. *sigh*)

Anyway, here's the scoopage:

The manager that took over when Gem and I left was indeed performing special favors for the Rat Bastard. Her hours were approximately four per day; she made the Dancer Assistant GM which did not work out so well. Apparently the Dancer let the power go to her head and she ran amok, treating my precious housekeepers like shit. I'm totally disappointed. (Shame on you, girl! You were taught so much better! SHAME SHAME SHAME!!)

The manager spoke with Miss Thang and expressed her dismay that I didn't stick around and talk with her, that she was sorry I didn't discuss things with her before I left, and told Miss Thang she knew I wanted Gem's job and that's why I booked.

Miss Thang backed her up into a corner and said, "I call bullshit. Miss Netta NEVER wanted Gem's job, and let me tell you something else. If Miss Netta WANTED Gem's job, she'd have it. Clear?" End of convo. Except the manager expressed this opinion to anyone who would listen. Most knew better.

I cracked up. I told Miss Thang, guurl, anyone that knew me, anyone that worked with me, anyone that even had a passing acquaintance with me knew I wouldn't take that job if it were dripping with diamonds. I'd rather stick a hot poker in my eye than work with Rat Bastard and his father one more minute. She giggled.

The closer it came to the deadline regarding the flag (you know, the one we were told was being pulled, the one the Rat Bastard insisted we were going to keep, the one that was ultimately pulled just as predicted?) the less and less supplies were ordered, so there was no inventory to stock or clean rooms. Evidently, this translated into guest dissatisfaction, employee frazzlement (of which the housekeepers bore the brunt) and a complete breakdown of all the stuff Gem and I had managed to accomplish. Very Sad. And the rest of the news isn't much better, I'm afraid.

One by one, much like a military campaign, the management made conditions so bad for my people they finally fell and were replaced by the chosen ones. My maintenance guy had some personal problems, but then he got hurt at work and now has a workman's comp case against the hotel. I so hope that works out for him. He was replace by the manager's husband. (Evidently special favors for the Rat Bastard were just part of the job. ICK.)

The Breakfast Lady (who was not playing with a full deck after a lifetime of alcohol abuse which she finally kicked, bless her heart) was totally taken advantage of and abused at the job, mostly at the hands of the Dancer, and in conjunction with other personal problems is now in treatment at a mental facility.

One of the other housekeepers (I can't remember if I gave her a nickname or not) who was one of my favorites and used to bring me pictures of her dressed to the nines and dancing in a club lost her adult son in mysterious circumstances. He went out one night, was seen in a car with a man and a woman, and was never seen again. This was almost two years ago, and they still haven't found him. Fliers are still going up, but no sign. On the day she found out he was missing, she called in to work and went down to the police station. The new manager fired her.

And Buddy. I know you remember Buddy. Well, he tried to hold the fort, but it was a losing battle. See, the Rat Bastard's father never liked Buddy being in management as head housekeeper, even though he did an amazing job. This is due to two factors, I think. One, Buddy is a male. I think it had something to do with the Alpha male thing. Second, Buddy is black. The family is not, although they are not Caucasian, either. And in their world, black is not beautiful. I'm sure you smell what I'm cooking here.

Anyway.

Buddy struggled with the Dancer, who seemed to think all the sins were directly a result of housekeeping fuckups. It finally came down to a showdown between the Rat Bastard's father and Buddy -- and Buddy was fired. I am so hoping that he landed on his feet on the right side of the line. I cannot tell you how much this hurt my heart.

Of Gem there has been only one sighting. She stopped in right around the time I was going through all that stuff (you know what I'm talking about) and asked for a cheap rate for her visiting son. The End.

Miss Thang arose one morning, called her boo, and said, I cannot go back to that place. She found herself another job and is doing great, which makes me happy.

And that's the scoopage. By all accounts, the place fell in the toilet and there it remains. I called there to get a copy of my W2's for 2008 (which I never received) and spoke with a girl who was not happy to be working there and was not shy about telling me. She said, this place really sucks now. I said honey, it sucked before, I can only imagine. My condolences.

****

As I look back, although the suckage was mighty at times, I have a ton of great memories of working there with my Posse, and I'm so glad I journaled through most of it. I have worked a lot of jobs with a lot of different people, and I can honestly say that was the best crew I have ever worked with. Ever. It was challenging, it was stressful, and it was the most interesting job I have ever held. I don't miss the work -- although I was very good at what I did. I do miss the people, and I always will. With the exception of the Rat Bastard and his father. Hopefully those people will get exactly what they deserve at some point.

****

Time passes and the world moves on, doesn't it? I wish I had better news, but I can hope for my Posse they will eventually move on to better and brighter things, which is my heartfelt prayer for them. Because although time does pass and the world does move on, the fingerprints they left on my heart have not faded and never will.
