The Good and the Ugly

We'll take the ugly and get that out of the way first, shall we? I think that's best.

My laptop died. Just rolled over and gave up the ghost with no warning whatsoever. The way I coddle the damned thing, I thought that would never happen. I defrag and run the anti-virus every morning, I have it sitting on a cooling pad, and I have provided shiny accouterments such as a hub so as not to tax its two USB ports, a new monitor, and I carefully and tenderly brush away all dirt and dust regularly. Of course, what I haven't done is back up regularly.

Oh, my major stuff is either residing on a convenient flash drive (which is crammed to the gills) and I have emailed the novel to myself, although I did not do that with the edits. All my newest copy work is on it, but since I sell those for full rights, it's not a huge deal, although it's a lot of research and valuable spinning I can use.

The good news about this is I currently reside in a hotbed of computer geeks -- the kind of geeks who take this kind of thing personally and will not rest until it is resolved. It seems to be a point of pride. The diagnosis is an update incompatible with my Dell. A KNOWN incompatibility, can you even stand it?

I am assured I haven't lost any data. In the meantime, I had to break out the backup -- the Vaio, my first love -- and deal with the missing "W" key, the sticky space bar, and the agonizing slow load times. First of all, I'm grateful I have a backup, and second, I'm grateful I have good friends who are attempting to put the pieces back together. For the record, I HATE MICROSOFT. This is enough to send me into the arms of Steve Jobs.

Ironically enough, I wrote six articles yesterday on cloud computing, online data backup, and offsite data storage.

*sigh*

For the spectacular news..."The Blood" was picked up for publication by Skive Magazine in their August issue.

I am so excited about that. Special thanks to Dave, Laurie, Stacy, Loey, Bronwyn, and especially Taer for helping me whip it into shape. Very stoked.

I'm going to attempt to complete some writing assignments today. I wonder how long it will take me before I get out the hammer.
