2003-02-21 10:10 PM Scamming the Scammer? Previous Entry :: Next Entry Mood: Contemplative Read/Post Comments (5) Well, it was yesterday when I received the call from these people, who reminded me that I had filled in a survey form at Singapore Expo Center a few months back. Apparently I had been chosen to receive a voucher entitling me to, quote, "free accommodation for 7 nights anywhere in the world" and for up to 6 people. The people calling me were a "travel club" but not a travel agency (I asked them, trying to figure it out) and wanted me to go collect the gift voucher, but fill in another form first, and to lie about my income, and to provide the last four digits on my visa number to see if I was eligible for another gift, sit around for a 90-minute presentation (I thought they said 19 minutes) and god knows what else. I'd been suspicious when they'd first called, grilling them about the voucher, the catches, and procedures, and though the answers had been satisfactory enough for most of the questions yesterday, it just didn't make sense when I thought about the visa business and the "90-minute presentation about where you can go with the voucher." Looking back, the girl couldn't have been completely honest with me.
And between yesterday and today, the same people called me a total of five times to confirm I was going to the presentation and collection, before I decided I was tired of it and no, I wasn't going. From what I found out from my aunt when she caught wind of it, these callers sounded a lot like the scammers she'd heard of, luring people to attend long presentations, persuading these people to participate in time-sharing accommodation. Sometimes these timeshare plans are real, but half of the time they are also scams, but all the time they are not free, and the even the free gifts have a lot of conditions they won't reveal till too late. I found this page on the Consumer Association of Singapore's website just now, and was relieved I decided not to go to their presentation, to block their calls, and didn't lose 90 minutes of my life watching something that would have bored me to tears, I'm sure. No, I spent that time shopping. Got some new large paper to play with watercolors on, and a collection of assorted sandpaper to torture those same surfaces with. I've got loads of ideas I'm wanting to try for new techniques. BTW, new poll on my website, asking your opinion about nudity in fantasy art. Someone already voted that I'm not drawing enough nekkid people. It's been cracking me up. Thanks for voting that one! Currently listening to:
