It was a small store in a quiet high-end shopping mall, and my father knew the owner after visiting it so regularly with the shopaholics at his office. Well, I'm glad I'm went, because I got a two-hour class on geminology (particularly on diamonds and their authentication) and got to look at a variety of stones under various magnifications, including under 40x magnification to see identifying laser inscriptions.
The owner was really friendly and accommodating, and a fountain of information, talking about everything from lighting in jewelry shops to marketing and wastage in jewelry making. I felt like I was having the most interesting time there than I'd had in a long time, and of course it was also nice being surrounded by dazzling stones. (I have to add though, before Jason gets worried, that I can look at this stuff but rarely feel any burning desire to own these things. In fact I think jewelry looks best en masse, in shop displays, and I'm happy enough to just admire them that way.) The other fun part was also giving advice to my aunt on what to buy, and trying on the potential pieces and the eliminated pieces. They did look real good on me. (Big grin.)
