Herrmann has been really good and I'm happy with the way the UEC Labs brochure came out, at least what I saw of it. I'm actually glad I went down there. We were able to avert a near-catastrophe related to how the pantone 285 and the silver ink were going to interact. I always think I lay these files out in a very straightforward manner, but apparently they are only straightforward to me. :/ It all turned out ok in the end, DG was nice enough to accompany me, since I would have been about as useful as a stump. I was basically going to get a look at how the silver was going to play off the blue. The blue was more of a surprise to me really. All of my CMYK prints have had the blue much darker. This 285 came out much lighter than I had expected or designed for. I think the silver still works with it, but they are much closer in value than I anticipated. This can be good and bad. If the silver and the blue are now the same value, then that means your eye is going to travel in a different manner than I intended. Your eye is always drawn to the spot where the darkest value meets the lightest value. I now have no idea where that spot would be. But its shine and spiffy, so I'm not to broken up about it. I'm looking forward to actually seeing it assembled, which should be in a few days. I think we can actually put this one to bed! I also spent the morning wrapping up the "Your Passion is Profit" Ad for the Modern Metals magazine. This was pretty easy changes, since MS really knew what she wanted. Mainly I added more photos to the top of the swoosh, to give it more of a "strip of film feel" and less of a "conveyer belt feel." I also did some text adjusting, since Illustrator has no good tools for handling good text presentation. (Nothing like quark) I still think there is too much information on the ad, but I didn't really have control over the content. I think it turned out pretty sweet and hope to get something up on the web soon. I haven't really worked on much else, though I did turn in some thumbnails for the MINUTE newsletter masthead this afternoon. I expect those to be shot down tomorrow. I personally don't feel I've found the right image that will convey "industrial technology" but I'm closer. The thumbnails I turned in have some element conflicts in them (text over lines, swoosh over swoosh, etc.) but I put them before the critics as a sampler platter. Their choices not only give me a basic design, they also tell me what the critics are actually trying to say. Designs can go many different ways. This type of input helps me give people what they are asking for. I'm not sure if this means I'm a glorified yes man. I figure more years of experience will help determine if that is the right way to go about designing. I think that is the difference between art and design work. Design gives people what they want. Art gives people what they need. I also have begun the slow churning and gnawing work of getting a job. I'm only intuiting at the moment, but its time to start thinking about what I really want to do in the future. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
