friday five--brushes with greatness

David Letterman used to have a feature on his show called "Brushes with Greatness." Members of the audience would share stories of encounters with famous people. And so...

1. Tell us about a time you met someone famous.
I think I've written about this before, but one of my friends in high school got really good at getting autographs. He always knew where to stand outside the various concert venues. Sometimes he'd follow the limo and he got to where he could tell based on what exit they took whether they were going to the airport or other location and would get there first and be waiting for them. Wow, he was always very respectful but as I type it out it sounds like stalking.

He was also very picky about getting things signed with a Sharpie. I agree it makes for the best 'graphs.

I only went with him a couple of times. When it came time to meet Sting, well, that was too great to pass up. So as his limo pulled out of the concert parking lot, the driver made a couple of turns and D said, "Ha! I know where he's going!"

And so, when Sting arrived at an extremely upscale gentleman's club, I met him briefly (in the parking lot) and got his autograph. He was polite, but tired. And I was close enough to see the stubble.

Incidentally, friend of mine went on to sell all of his autographed stuff on eBay and lived on the proceeds for quite some time.

2. Tell us about a celebrity you'd like to meet.
I'll go with Cheesehead and say The Clooney.

3. Tell us about someone great who's *not* famous that you think everyone oughta have a chance to meet.
R and I have a friend who is a true jack of all trades. He is a super nice guy, but also has a series of very interesting hobbies. When he was an RA in college he learned to cut hair which gave him an opportunity to get to know all of the guys in the dorm where he worked. Sort of a ministry. I think he said he did 3,000 haircuts over the years. He also brews beer and has just gotten into wine.

4. Do you have any autographs of famous people?
See #1.

5. If you were to become famous, what would you want to become famous for?
Writing a book!

Bonus: Whose 15 minutes of fame was up long, long ago?
Um, the President? I am So Over Him.
