2006-07-13 8:48 AM Shifting Emphases Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (5) An organization with which I am associated is going to invite a pacificist speaker to give a talk about "Honoring the Warrior," specifically referring to the more than 2,500 American servicemen and women who have lost their lives in Iraq.
Several of us are uncomfortable about this. Yes, we want to honor our dead. Yes, these people died in a war zone. But it is so easy to shift the emphasis from honoring the soldier to glorifying the battle, from respect for the dead to hatred of the enemy. What do you think?
