2010-02-06 7:18 PM Election Volunteer Previous Entry :: Next Entry Read/Post Comments (1) Today was the second day of voting for our school district, in a nonbinding vote for how new schools would be run, by the school district or by competing charter school organizations.
I assisted as a vounteer; the whole setup was orchestrated by the League of Women Voters. I was surprised that they were all older women, none in their 20's, 30's or 40's, a demographic that I fitted right into. We had about 500 voting in the space of three and a half hours. I was stationed by the ballot box, telling them to fold their ballots and put them in the box, thanking them for venturing forth on a rainy Saturday to make their choices known. A smile and a thank you received and reciprocated. Now I'm very tired, my throat is hoarse and my hip hurts something fierce from being on my feet from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. but I wouldn't have missed it for the world. People are so interesting to watch and I got to explain to the children who voted why they needed to fold their ballots and not write their names on them. (Once a teacher, always a teacher). Early to bed tonight. Read/Post Comments (1) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
