It's been that way for all of my life, and I have always thought of it as The Way Things Are. Immutable, unchangeable, the required pace and rhythm of working life.
Well, it's not. As I read in the news recently, in Sweden the average work week has hit a new high--26.2 hours. Unions there are complaining about the resultant impact on workers' health. This is the same Sweden where health care is government funded (paying 97% of the cost of medical treatment) and decentralized (though private medical care is also available).
